The third Labtones Live! event took place on Saturday October 15th. Three acts with a variety of musical styles performed on stage. Here is a short report with text and pictures!

The first act to perform was Deauville Blue. The band was formed by members of Wash Inc. (also known on Labtones) when they met singer Angelica Gerde on a vacation. The gig at Labtones Live! was their first performance in this setup, although nobody noticed that, probably. Angelica has a lot of experience in the music world, which reflects in her voice and stage presence. Her voice blends beautifully with that of Wash-Inc. singer Ingrid. The two singers are supported by a guitarist and a double bass player. The band plays jazzy versions of famous songs, Wash-Inc. songs and some own material. Let's hope more gigs will follow soon!

Frank Montis of the Frank Montis Trio also has lots of experience, both as playing for others as being the frontman of his own jazz / soul band DelMontis. On Labtones Live!, he performs in a slightly different setup (without Saxophone player Rolf Delfos). He sits behind his Fender Rhodes, while he sings Delmontis songs and an occasional cover song. He has a very nice, strong voice and his playing on the Rhodes is also amazing. Together with his bass player and drummer, who also play very good and steady, he sometimes starts to improvise, with long and suburb instrumental solos.

The last act of the evening is very special for Labtones, since the album by IJzeren Vogel was mostly recorded and produced in the Labtones Studio. This project by Dutch singer Alex van Holstein is quite special: music with electronic and rock influences, combined with unconventional Dutch lyrics. On the self-titled album, Van Holstein got musical help from various friends, but recently he formed a completely new band with other skilled musicians to perform the songs live. The musicians are able to translate the songs to a live situation very well and the audience clearly enjoys the original songs.

All black is often the default colour because it's the easier to unify (imagine an ensemble full of slightly different shades of red), it's easy on the eyes, and the audience tends to focus more on the music than if the ensemble were wearing different colours. The problem with saying go for it, wear any colour is what one person considers stylish another will consider completely inappropriate. There there's the issue of colour clashing. And in classical music, there are known stereotypes about what kind of dress is associated with certain types of music. Opera performers (and audiences) tend to go all out with style and flamboyance; Baroque performers (and audiences) tend not to consider fashion a big deal and are very low-key with their apparel. Ultimately, no, I don't think ensembles should be able to wear any colour; then it looks like a rehearsal.
