Labtones Artist of the Month October: Alex van Holstein

Artist of the Month No Comments »

Our artist of the month October is quite a special one, since he only sings in the Dutch language: Alex van Holstein. But, his melancholic songs fit the autumn season so well, we just HAD to pick him for this month. And, his last two recordings were recorded at the Labtones Studios.
Alex van Holstein is constantly working on developing himself musically, and this is why he sounds different on every album. So far, he has released three: Het mag sneeuwen (It may snow, 2006), IJzeren vogel (Iron bird, 2011) and Papieren vogel (Paper bird, 2012).  What all three albums have in common, are the uncomfortable lyrics and melancholic music. Gradually, Alex is being picked up by the Dutch national radio stations. For example, 'Sara op Zondag' ('Sara on Sunday', Radio 2) will give away two albums to listeners in the near future and often songs from the latest album are being played on the show '' (Radio 2). As said before, his last two CDs were recorded at the Labtones Studios, with the help of some musical friends of Alex. At Labtones HQ, we can't get enough of his songs and we think the music is best explained by this quote from a review by “Actually, we don't know anyone else who is so good at describing the tragedy of a backup player from VV Papendrecht 2 as Alex van Holstein does. Small things get big and big things get small. Beautiful.”

Labtones Artist of the Month September: The Cosmic Carnival

Artist of the Month No Comments »

Our new artist of the month The Cosmic Carnival (NL) was founded in 2007, but this could also be 1967. Because in the sixties really good songs were written, according to the band. Accordingly, the music of The Cosmic Carnival is clearly inspired by the song structures and sunny harmonies from this period. They also know how to mix this sound with modern influences from indie and rock in a clever way. In 2009 they won the Grote Prijs van Nederland (the biggest band competition of the Netherlands), after which the band concentrated on the many shows that followed. From intimate gigs in living rooms, to the big Paradiso venue in Amsterdam, to a tour in New York City. Recently, their first full-length album Change the World or Go Home was released in the Netherlands and Belgium. Later, the record will also be released in the rest of Europe. Curious how these catchy songs sound? On September 15, The Cosmic Carnival will perform on the Labtones stage during the Havenfestival in Alblasserdam (NL, for more info:! Can't wait that long? Artist of the Month August: Portrait [Bizarre]

Artist of the Month 4 Comments »

We proudly announce the artist of the month July: Portrait [Bizarre]. This five-piece band from Maasmechelen, Belgium, consists of Yannick (vocals), Marc (guitar), Herbert (bass), Raymond (keyboards) en Ron (drums). Basically, the band was already formed 22 years ago (!). Yannick and Ron joined recently, giving a “fresh start with an experienced base”. According to the band themselves, they make modern, radio-friendly pop music. We also hear influences from alternative music, from bands such as Placebo for example. They are working hard on perfecting their live performance since 2010, and by now they are performing live a lot. They gave a great show at Labtones Live in May, for example. In between gigs, they can be found in their own studio – an old miner's house – where they are working on their debut album. This is certainly going to be a great album, since they are getting help from the well-known Belgium producer Luc van Acker. Some demo songs can already be found on their Labtones profile page:

Labtones Artist of the Month July: Yours

Some artists do not care for musical boundaries and YOURS from Portland (USA) are certainly one of those. This duo, consisting of Matthan Megrew Minster and Adam Trachsel, blends elements spanning the entire spectrum of the musical palette. At the center is Minster's unmistakably powerful vocals aptly characterized as the "Pavarotti of psychedelic rock", combined with equally powerful songs that reference McCartney-esque classic pop/rock as well as modern hip-hop, rock and world music. According to the band members, even the name YOURS “implies an ambiguous displacement of ownership of the band to anyone”. So far, the band has released a seven-track EP and recently a single called “Spin a top”. Currently, they are working on their first full-length album, which should be released later in 2012. At Labtones HQ, we decided not to wait for this release, because you should not miss this exciting band! Check out some of their songs – including their newest single “Spin a top”, which previously made it to the #1 position in the LabCharts! – on their Labtones profile:
